Ipé / Brazilian Walnut

Ipé “Brazilian Walnut” (pronounced “e-pay”) is widely recognised as one of the hardest and most durable timber species in the world. Due to its density, it also has a high fire resistance rating (the same as for concrete). The wood is sometimes referred to as Ironwood or Pau Lope.

Ipé is naturally resistant to rot and decay, and therefore requires no chemical preservative treatment.

The wood can vary widely in grain. The colour ranges from dark brown to olive-brown and sometimes with even almost blackish tones.

Pre-drilling is required for nailing and it holds screws well. Ipé also stains and polishes well.

Ipé’s many uses include residential and commercial decking, flooring, docks, park benches and many more. It’s ideal for use where a quality product is needed that will stand up to high traffic, provide structural integrity, look beautiful and, of course, be functional.
